Turtleback Farm & Education Center started on a 22 acre historic farm on the Nissequogue River in Smithtown back in 2009. “Jen’s Hens Eggs” was the first pastured poultry operation on Long Island. Farmer & Educator Jennifer Murray also raised sheep and pigs, and grew organically grown vegetables. This operation has since scaled back to raising laying hens, oyster growing, and running educational programs on the North Fork.
Jennifer, the Program Director, is a former Elementary, Science, and Writing Teacher with a Masters Degree in Education. She has experience creating curriculums at Friends Academy and developing environmental education programs and activities at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary in Oyster Bay and other locations.
Turtleback Farm Summer Program is a full day program running all summer on a private farm in rural Cutchogue on the North Fork. This program is designed to enrich the lives of youth through a myriad of experiential hands-on activities, socialization, and cooperative activities.
The Cross Farm is a 30 acre former plant nursery consisting of various habitats including woodlands, fields, and freshwater ponds, making it an ideal location for environmental studies.
